The best way to send a care package to a crew member

Since direct parcel delivery to crew members at sea is not always possible, there are a number of common pick-up and delivery locations, often used by cruise ships and staff:
Dedicated offices
Usually, vessels and cruise operators have designated offices in different ports. Contact the operator beforehand and ask if it is possible to list them as a pick-up or delivery location. As soon as your crew member arrives at the next port, they can collect their parcel.
Port house or office
Usually, vessels and cruise operators have designated offices in different ports. Contact the operator beforehand and ask if it is possible to list them as a pick-up or delivery location. As soon as your crew member arrives at the next port, they can collect their parcel.
Luggage depots
When visiting major ports of cruise liners, there may be a luggage depot nearby which specialise in storing luggage and parcels for passengers and crew.

How to avoid issues with parcel delivery to crew members at sea

Keep in mind the following information when sending care packages to crew members, sailors, deckhands or captains at sea to avoid a failed delivery:
Missing company name
Many people will add the name of the receiver and the name of the vessel, but forget the name of the ships’ company or the port office where the parcel should be dropped off.
Entrance to port
The port might not be accessible for everyone by car or truck. When the vehicle of the courier company needs special permission to enter the port, this should be communicated before. In this case, you should always contact our customer support to discuss the details.
Language barrier
When you communicate with the courier, be aware that they usually speak the local language. When your language skills are not up to speed yet, be sure that you have someone with you who can help you out.
Too late
When the ship has already left the port, it is too late for delivery to the ultimate recipient. Try to book your order 2 work-days ahead of the planned departure time, and you should be good to go.

What can I send in a care package to a crew member?

Deciding what to send in a care package to a crew member at sea will depend on the person. Perhaps they have forgotten their laptop or favourite book at home? Or they are away for a longer period and are missing some comforts from home? Here are some packing tips for shipping to a crew member:
Electronics
Send a laptop, camera, iPad or game console to a crew member, to help them pass the time when they are off-duty.
Musical instruments
Is your crew member a musician in their spare time? Send a guitar, violin or keyboard so they can keep passengers and crew entertained.
Personal items
Sending personal items while at sea for long periods will make life easier for your crew member. However, remember that certain cosmetics, cigarettes and liquor come with some restrictions.

What is prohibited to ship to crew members?

There are a number of items which are not only prohibited by cruise operators, but also by courier companies and quite some items which you should check for restrictions before shipping. These include:
  • Illegal drugs
  • Alcohol
  • Weapons
  • Certain electronics which may interfere with navigation
Be sure to check the ship’s rules and regulations carefully before shipping. For example, Royal Caribbean has a comprehensive list of items which are banned from bringing on board, and therefore will not be possible to send in a care package to a crew member.
