How to pack honey for shipping?

Follow these packing tips to prepare honey jars properly for shipping:

  • Put each jar into a plastic bag and secure it with bubble wrap.
  • Put some cushioning materials on the bottom of the box.
  • Put wrapped honey jars into a smaller box.
  • Attach Styrofoam or polystyrene sheets to the outer sides of the smaller box.
  • Put the smaller box into a larger one.
  • Fill empty spaces with cushioning materials and close the box.
  • You can put warning labels saying “Fragile” or “Handle with care”.
  • Prepare the pallet (for large honey shipments)
  • Stack the boxes one onto another.
  • Fix them with a packaging rope and wrap them in plastic foil to make sure they cannot move on the pallet.

Shipping honey: rules and regulations to respect

Even though every courier has specific restrictions and packaging requirements related to sending food and liquids, many people ship honey internationally on a regular basis.
Certified companies working in the apiculture segment can send big amounts of honey worldwide through courier services. To do so, they must comply with safety, packaging, labelling and import regulations of the destination country and provide all the necessary documents. It is also crucial to secure the product in adequate leak-proof containers. All the companies exporting honey must comply with the hygiene (e.g. Honey Bee Health Certificate) and quality standards established by the destination country.

Private individuals can mail honey to each other both within and outside the EU, provided they pack it well for shipping. Courier companies will not be held liable for damages that may occur to this type of products during transit. If you decide to ship honey and other liquid products in the mail, it is not recommended to post more than 1L abroad.

MORE INFORMATION

FAQs about shipping honey in the mail and by courier

Is there any insurance for shipping honey?

In most cases, no, because it is a liquid and a fragile item, even though it depends on the courier’s Terms and Conditions, as well as on the quality of packaging.

Can you ship honey in the mail?

Yes. According to the Universal Post Union regulations, securely closed packages containing up to 1L of liquids (including honey) should be accepted.

Can you send honey overseas?

Yes. Different quantities of this product are regularly shipped as a gift both by post and through courier services by many people, especially within the European Union, as in these cases, the parcels do not undergo customs controls, except for the islands such as Ireland or the UK. Given that these items are not covered by insurance, private senders need to pack honey properly for safe shipping.

Can I ship honey from the EU to the USA or Canada?

Yes. Both countries allow shipping honey for personal use.

Take into consideration these guidelines when shipping honey nationally and internationally. Nevertheless, please consider that following them does not guarantee that the courier company will transport your package without restriction. In case you decide to ship honey with one of our partners, Eurosender will not be held responsible for any damages caused by the transportation of your shipment.
